New research indicates that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such medications should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
