This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a figure of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness about him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the narrative of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and direct fact that Christ in biblical accounts calls for a kind of profound affection centered on the needy has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Finest Among Us
