The New Mayor Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in First Address
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.
The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Platform
Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:
- Universal childcare
- Free buses
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Headwinds
The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.
The Basic Tests of Leadership
Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.
As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
