Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired twice late to take a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to send the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 shootout victory.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
